CALIFORNIA SHIPPER FINED $135,000 FOR ILLEGAL EXPORTS

The U.S. Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security has imposed a civil penalty of $135,000 on Printrak, an Anaheim, Calif.-based subsidiary of Motorola Co., for illegally exporting fingerprinting system and encryption software overseas.

The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) said the illegal shipments occurred 37 times between January 1997 and October 2000. For eight of these shipments, the agency alleged that Printrak made false statements on its shipper’s export declarations.

“Printrak voluntarily disclosed these alleged violations to BIS and cooperated fully in the investigation,” the agency said.
