Canada to get aviation security checkup

The International Civil Aviation Organization will conduct an audit of Canada’s aviation security system to make sure the country is following international standards, Transport Canada said last week.

Beginning in May, auditors will check that proper legislation, policy, regulation, systems and security measures are in place to protect airports and aircraft from terrorists.

Canada was not scheduled for an early audit, but officials requested a quicker review to demonstrate support for the new ICAO initiative. Audits are conducted at both the national and airport levels in order to evaluate a state’s aviation security oversight capabilities and the actual security measures in place at targeted airports.

The review will be used to identify areas in the country’s aviation security system that need improvement.
