James Caponiti has been appointed president of the American Maritime Congress, a nonprofit organization representing the U.S. maritime industry. He has been executive director of AMC since October 2011.
Previously, he had a career lasting more than 30 years at the U.S. Maritime Administration. His expertise spans most of MarAd’s promotional programs supporting
the U.S.-flag shipping industry, and most significantly he was responsible for
the development, implementation and management of the Maritime Security
Program and its companion program, the Voluntary Intermodal
Sealift Agreement.
AMC represents the interests of shipping companies that employ members of the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association, and has board members from both the industry and the union.
