Caribbean airline LIAT being eyed for merger

The state-owned Caribbean airline LIAT is the subject of merger discussions that could reach a critical phase this week, according to a report in the Jamaica Observer.

LIAT is owned by the governments of Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The report said discussions are scheduled this week in St. Johns between the prime ministers of those countries and Allen Stanford, the American owner of the airline Caribbean Star.

That meeting is set for Tuesday evening, and the prime ministers will meet on Wednesday with LIAT management to discuss the merger of LIAT and Caribbean Star, the report said.
