CathayÆs 2006 cargo volume up 7.2%

Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific carried 1.2 million tons of freight in 2006, up 7.2 percent over 2005.

The airline's cargo volume growth was above a 5.2 percent rise in capacity, resulting in its cargo and mail load factor improving 1.3 points to 68.3 percent.

'Our long-haul services to North America and Europe continue to do well, but yields are under pressure in the face of more competition from neighboring hubs in the region. We are also seeing an increasing shift of air cargo to marine, particularly out of Japan and Korea, as a result of high fuel prices,' said Ron Mathison, Cathay Pacific's director and general manager cargo.
