Census to shut down AES for overhaul
The Automated Export System used to file export declarations will be down for 78 hours to allow the U.S. Census Bureau time to complete its planned redesign, Expeditors International said in a customer notice citing an administrative message from the agency.
The service outage will begin at midnight June 5 and continue through 6 a.m. EDT June 8.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Census Bureau encourage exporters and their agents to transmit export transactions ahead of time. If that is not possible, the system will process the transaction on Tuesday if a special code is used for dual use items on the Commercial Control List. Licensed shipments and those on the U.S. Munitions Control List need to be filed by 4 p.m. today or the item cannot be shipped until Tuesday.
Customs may permit emergency exports of military-type goods by truck and air if a paper Shipper’s Export Declaration is provided with an explanation about why the shipment is urgent. Paper SEDs will also be required for emergency shipments of industrial goods requiring a Bureau of Industry and Security license.
