Chile to rejoin Andean trade bloc

Chile has started the process that will return it to participation in the Andean Community trade bloc after 30 years, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet says.

She said Chile received a formal invitation from the Andean Community on Monday, making Chile an 'observer' with associate member status. That is expected to lead to full membership in the future, she added.

Member nations include Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Venezuela was a member, but Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced this year he was withdrawing his country from the trade bloc.
