CHINA SHIPPING LAUNCHES 5,668-TEU CONTAINERSHIP
China Shipping Group has launched the “Xin Pu Dong,” a containership that it described as China’s largest.
The large container vessel was built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyards, Ltd. in Shanghai.
The “Xin Pu Dong” is 279.6-meter long, 40.3-meter wide and has a deadweight tonnage of 68,000 tons. It features a service speed of 26 knots and a nominal carrying capacity of 5,668 TEUs.
On Oct. 4, China Shipping also launched a slightly smaller ship, the 5,618-TEU vessel “Xin Da Lian.”
The Chinese shipping company said that both ships will be deployed on China Shipping’s main container routes in January.
“In June two years ago, a ceremony was held in the Great Hall of the People, Beijing, for the signing of contracts for 8 container ships awarded to Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyards and Dalian New Shipyard respectively,” a spokesman for China Shipping said.
