Clinton to give keynote at Kvaerner Philadephia Shipyard April 14

Former President Bill Clinton will deliver the keynote address at a Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard celebration Thursday.

The event, which includes the announcement on future shipbuilding projects at the former naval base, is designed to praise the recent achievements of the commercial shipyard.

In 1993, Clinton signed into law the National Shipbuilding Initiative, which helped lay the groundwork for Kvaerner’s activities at Philadelphia.

At the event, Clinton will also be joined by Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell who, as mayor of Philadelphia, helped to transform the United States’ first Navy Yard into a successful commercial shipbuilder. Kiell Inge Rokke, the main owner of the shipyard’s parent company, will also speak.

Kvaerner recently completed construction of two U.S.-flag containerships for Matson Navigation Co., and will build two more for delivery to the Oakland, Calif.-based carrier in July 2005 and June 2006.
