CLM name change highlights importance of supply chain

The Council of Logistics Management has decided to change its name to the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, effective Jan. 1.

The association said the change reflects the increasing intersection of logistics with procurement, manufacturing, and sales and marketing functions and the increasing responsibilities its members are taking on.

'People in our profession now have an expanded and more critical role within our companies than we did 10 or even five years ago. Our roles have evolved, which is why the CLM is changing to reflect what's happening in the supply chain,' said Elijah Ray, president of the organization, which has about 10,000 members. 'The organization will also become more inclusive to others that play important roles in the supply chain.'

In 1985, the career association underwent a similar transformation when the National Council of Physical Distribution Management, the name under which the association was founded in 1963, became the Council of Logistics Management in recognition of the fact that logistics encompasses more than just transportation and distribution.
