CN unions threaten strike

The services of Canadian National Railway Co. could be disrupted from this Friday by a strike by the Canadian Auto Workers union, after the union’s members rejected three tentative agreements signed by the Canadian Auto Workers and CN on Jan. 23.

The union represents about 5,000 CN shop craft, clerical and intermodal yard employees in Canada. The existing union contracts expired on Dec. 31, 2003.

The Canadian Auto Workers warned they would carry out the strike starting Friday at 1 a.m., if the parties fail to reach new tentative agreements by then.

CN said yesterday that, if the strike goes forward, it has “contingency plans” to maintain freight services in Canada.
