Coast Guard asks input for ship ballast water discharge standards

The U.S. Coast Guard will hold five meetings around the country in October and November to gather public input for the development of ship ballast water discharge standards.

Both the National Invasive Species Act and National Environmental Policy Act require the Coast Guard to set controls for ship ballast water discharges to prevent the spread of aquatic pests in U.S. waters.

Meetings are scheduled for New Orleans, Oct. 27; Oakland, Calif., Oct. 29; Cleveland, Oct. 31; Norfolk, Va., Nov. 3; and Washington, Nov. 7.
