Coast Guard investigates ship grounding in Charleston

The U.S. Coast Guard has started an investigation into a bulk cargo ship that grounded Tuesday in the port of Charleston, S.C.

The 615-foot “Bahama Spirit” grounded at 6 a.m. when it attempted to enter the harbor. The Vanuatu-flagged vessel is carrying a load of crushed granite. Its last port of call was in Canada.

The Coast Guard said salvage operations will be conducted as weather permits. The agency is also working with the representative of the vessel’s owner and the South Carolina Port Authority.
