COAST GUARD REGULATES HAZMAT CARGOES ON INLAND WATERS
The U.S. Coast Guard has established regulated navigation areas covering U.S. inland waters for owners of barges loaded with certain dangerous cargoes (CDCs).
The rules for such areas require the owners or operators of barges with hazmat cargoes to report their position and other information to the Coast Guard’s Inland River Vessel Movement Center.
The navigation areas, which will remain under Coast Guard regulations until Oct. 31, include the Mississippi River above mile 235, the Atchafalaya River and Red Rivers, the Ohio River, and the Tennessee River, with all of their tributaries.
These regulated navigation areas do not apply to operators of empty CDC barges, nor to other river traffic.
