COMMERCE TIGHTENS EXPORT CONTROLS FOR EXPLOSIVE DETECTION EQUIPMENT

The U.S. Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security has increased its export controls on certain explosive detection devices and related software.

The agency developed the regulation in consultation with the State, Defense and Transportation departments to enhance security for airline travel and public buildings.

“This regulation is a significant part of the bureau’s efforts to keep equipment and know-how out of the hands of terrorists,” said Kenneth I. Juster, undersecretary of commerce for industry and security.

“In particular, this regulation will help ensure that terrorists are not able to learn to defeat or circumvent the explosive detection equipment,” he said.
