Congress OKs funding for New York-New Jersey dredge projects
U.S. Congress last week approved $110 million in the fiscal year 2004 Energy and Water Development appropriations bills to fund federal channel deepening projects at the Port of New York and New Jersey.
The funding allows work to continue on deepening projects in the Kill van Kull-Newark Bay, the Arthur Kull and Port Jersey channels. In addition, $2.6 million was provided for estuary restoration feasibility studies and $19.2 million for ongoing federal channel maintenance dredging projects.
The channel-deepening program is part of a five-year $1-billion port redevelopment effort, said Anthony R. Coscia, chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
