COSCO SIGNS IT DEAL WITH OOCL

China Ocean Shipping Co. has made an agreement with Orient Overseas Container Line to use the information system of the Hong Kong-based shipping company.

Capt. Wei Jiafu, president and chief executive officer of the COSCO group and C.C. Tung, president of OOCL, signed the deal in Beijing on Nov. 11 (on Saturday).

Under the licensing agreement, COSCO will be licensed to the IRIS 2 integrated customer shipment management system of OOCL, which includes booking, tracking documentation and other related modules.

A spokesman for COSCO said that the agreement will speed up the construction of the group’s global information system for container transportation, “to improve the company’s management and make a significant progress in providing customer satisfaction service.”

OOCL has built up the IRIS 2 system during the past seven years.

The Hong Kong-based shipping company, which has traditionally had close links with COSCO, will assist the mainland Chinese carrier in the initial implementation of its IT system.

The OOCL/COSCO pact is the latest move towards cooperation between ocean carriers in the field of information technology and customer service systems.
