Crane arrives at new Suez Canal terminal
The first ship-to-shore crane of the Suez Canal Container Terminal, a new transshipment hub of APM Terminals and partners due to open later this year, has arrived at the Egyptian terminal.
The terminal is located at the Mediterranean end of the Suez Canal. The first crane delivered is one of five that the terminal has ordered. The next four cranes will arrive over the next few months.
The cranes are “super-post-Panamax” cranes with twin-lift capability, the terminal operator said. They have an outreach of 56 meters, equivalent to 22 containers across on a ship, which is more than the largest containerships afloat today.
Already on the site are eight rubber-tired gantry cranes. Another six will be delivered during the summer.
Suez Canal Container Terminal hopes to become a major transshipment hub for the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
