Cranes partially raise capsized ôStellamareö in Albany
Two large cranes in the port of Albany, N.Y., have raised the superstructure of the capsized heavy-lift cargo ship 'Stellamare' so that the vessel is now listing at 30 degrees instead of 75 degrees.
On Tuesday morning, the port (left) side of the vessel’s hull remained submerged, according to a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman. As the vessel is slowly righted, inspectors will check the position of a generator loaded in a cargo hold just before the 289-foot-long 'Stellamare' capsized dockside Dec. 9.
Three crewmen were killed when the ship turned over: Yuri Akofin, 48; Sulieman Khasenevich, 43, both engineers, and Victor Alexeev, 46, a welder. Two bodies have been recovered; the third is believed to be in a part of the vessel that is still flooded.
