CRC TO ENGAGE CUSTOMS ON ACE LEGISLATION REQUIREMENTS

Representatives from the Customs Reform Coalition (CRC) will soon engage the U.S. Customs Service on legislative needs to push the Automated Commercial Environment, said Richard Belanger, co-chair of the import committee of the Joint Industry Group, a Washington trade association.

Representatives of the CRC will press Customs to consider legislation that would help promote ACE, Customs’ computer system intended to monitor trade, Belanger told attendees at the annual National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America conference in Hollywood, Fal. Wednesday.

Belanger said the CRC would like to see legislative consideration for the right to protest, and the concept of a corrective period, or revision to entries.

The CRC, a coalition of 18 trade groups, was formed last year in response to the Customs Entry Reform Project. Belanger said the CRC was formed to promote Customs feedback, or “loopback,” to coalitions such as the CRC. “It’s now loopback time,” he said. “We are all at a new stage. We must address legislation requirements.”
