CSI goes live in Marseilles

The French port of Marseilles became the 34th international port to begin joint inspections with U.S. officers under the Container Security Initiative, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Friday.

CSI is a major component of the U.S. strategy to prevent terrorist attacks or smuggling using an ocean container. The goal of the program is to identify and inspect suspicious cargo before it moves across the ocean to a U.S. port. Under bilateral agreements with host nations, small teams of U.S. customs officers are stationed at foreign ports to point out cargo for their domestic counterparts to X-ray for anomalies.

CSI has been operational at the French port of Le Havre for two years.
