CSI screening begins at second Japanese port
U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspectors have been deployed to the port of Tokyo, and will begin targeting advance shipping data for links to terrorists and other illegal activity today, Customs said.
Tokyo is the 19th global port with U.S. inspectors on site screening high-risk shipments under a program known as the Container Security Initiative. U.S. Customs already has an active CSI program at the Port of Yokohama. U.S. inspectors will alert their Japanese counterparts of any suspicious shipments for closer examination.
Japan is the second CSI partner country to station customs personnel in U.S. ports as part of the reciprocal agreement. Japanese Customs personnel are stationed at the Port of Los Angeles/Long Beach.
