CUSTOMS EASES BURDEN FOR FILING HMF REFUND REQUESTS
The U.S. Customs Service is easing the burden for exporters seeking harbor maintenance fee refunds on fees paid after July 1, 1990.
Designed to speed up the process for those seeking refunds on fees, exporters will not be required to file supporting documentation with their refund requests, because Customs already has copies of original fee payment forms containing export vessel movement summary sheets or shipper export declaration letters.
However, export vessel movement summary sheets or SED letters will be required as proof of payment for refund requests on fee payments made prior to July 1, 1990.
All refund requests must specify the quarters for which refunds are being sought and must include the exporter’s name, address and employment information number, plus the name, telephone number or fax number or contact person to answer questions.
Refund requests are to be mailed to the U.S. Customs Service, HMT Refunds, 6026 Lakeside Blvd., Indianapolis, Ind. 26278.
