CUSTOMS INCREASES BORDER SECURITY
The U.S. Customs Service on Tuesday increased border security at all of America’s ports of entry, consistent with the national increase to Alert Level Orange.
The agency is implementing additional security precautions, including increased cargo and mail examinations. The White House approved the heightened level of alert after it received information from intelligence sources warning of possible terrorist attacks occurring one year after Sept. 11.
The Orange alert level is the fourth in a scale of five grades of warning. “At this time, we do not anticipate significant increases in wait times at the border as a result of the actions,” Customs said. Border wait times may be obtained at the agency’s Web site, http://www.customs.treas.gov.
