CUSTOMS ISSUES BOND REPLACEMENT RULES FOR 9/11 DESTROYED DOCUMENTS

The U.S. Customs Service said Monday that by June 12, it must receive copies of current bonds filed by importers prior to Sept. 11 at its New York City offices.

The terrorist attacks that day destroyed Customs bonds and other documents stored at the agency’s offices at 6 World Trade Center.

“Failure to provide a copy of the bond within the prescribed 30-day period will cause Customs to refuse to accept a reference to the bond to guarantee future transactions,” Customs said.

Customs added that, if an individual or business association cannot provide a copy of the bond, they must submit to the agency a new continuous bond application within the same 30-day period.

A Customs bond may be approved by the agency for an activity involving one individual Customs transaction, or as a continuous bond for an activity involving multiple Customs transactions.
