DAIMLERCHRYSLER PICKS SITE NEAR SAVANNAH FOR AUTO PLANT
Automaker DaimlerChrysler said it will build a new assembly plant in Pooler, Ga., near the ports of Savannah and Brunswick, Ga., for two types of vans now made only in Germany.
Construction of the $754 million, 2.3-million-square-foot plant will start in July 2003, on a 1,560-acre site 12 miles west of Savannah. The plant will build Sprinter and Vito passenger and cargo vans, employing about 3,300 workers on a payroll of $155 million a year.
Gov. Roy E. Barnes of Georgia said his state had offered DaimlerChrysler $320 million in incentives. DaimlerChrysler chose the Pooler site over another location near Charleston, S.C.
