Democrats respond to Bush’s homeland security campaign
In the Democratic response to President Bush’s State of the Union address to the American people Tuesday night, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi took issue with the President’s claim that his administration is doing all it can to protect the homeland from terrorist attack.
Bush said the 2005 budget he will send to Congress in two weeks will include funding for homeland security and other efforts, while limiting the growth in discretionary spending to less than 4 percent. He expressed hope of cutting the huge budget deficit in half within five years if Congress cuts out wasteful spending.
But Pelosi said Bush is not doing enough to provide homeland security and called for 100 percent of all containers to be inspected. A handful of lawmakers have previously called for similar levels of scrutiny.
