DHS ASKS FOR COMMENTS ON HANDLING INFRASTRUCTURE INTELLIGENCE
The Department of Homeland Security is creating rules to encourage companies and individuals to provide tips about critical infrastructure vital to national security, such as transportation, communications and utility systems, vulnerable to terrorist attacks.
In an April 15 notice of proposed rulemaking the department said it was working to establish uniform procedures for government agencies to protect voluntary disclosures of critical infrastructure information to the general public. Protected information may include knowledge of potential attacks or specific threats, infrastructure vulnerabilities and past operational problems regarding critical infrastructure or protected systems.
DHS said it would issue notices and warnings to protect critical infrastructure to protect from public disclosures the identity of the person submitting the information as well as information that is proprietary, business-sensitive and is not appropriate for the public domain.
