Divers to lift generator from capsized ship in Albany
Divers prepared Monday to remove a generator from the 'Stellamare,' a Dutch heavy-lift vessel that capsized Dec. 9 while loading a cargo of steel equipment.
“The generator has to be lifted to provide access to a part of the ship that the salvage crew needs to reach in order to be able to raise the vessel,” a Coast Guard spokesman in Albany told Shippers’ News Wire. The 'Stellamare' continues to lie on its side in 30 feet of water.
The bodies of three missing crewmen have not been found, but are believed to be in the ship’s flooded cargo hold.
The Coast Guard, which closed the Hudson River in the immediate vicinity, has allowed only barges carrying fuel oil needed for heating homes past the capsized vessel.
