DOT dispatches FAA team to Iraq
The U.S. Transportation Department will dispatch a team of Federal Aviation Administration officials to Iraq to assist in rebuilding the war-battered country’s transportation infrastructure.
DOT secretary Norman Y. Mineta made the announcement during a March 18 speech in Amman, Jordan, at the conclusion of a five-day trip to the Middle East.
Mineta said the FAA team would be followed by maritime, rail and surface transport officials. The DOT will establish a permanent mission at the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, when it opens in July.
Mineta also said the DOT will look for ways to increase transportation help to Afghanistan, and will seek to strengthen U.S. transportation ties with Jordan and Kuwait.
