DOT, NRC seek comments on global nuke material transport rules
The U.S. Transportation Department and Nuclear Regulatory Commission are jointly seeking comments on proposed changes to the International Atomic Energy Agency Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material.
The IAEA periodically revises these regulations to reflect new information and accumulated experience. The proposed changes are online at http://hazmat.dot.gov/regs/files/IAEADraftChanges.htm.
The DOT and NRC will take comments from the industry through July 1. The agencies will determine the U.S. comments on the proposed changes to be submitted to IAEA by Aug. 5. The proposed changes may be included in a revised edition of the regulations in 2007, nominally to become effective worldwide in 2009.
