DOT pushes short-sea shipping
A new government-industry venture to promote the use of coastal waterways and rivers to transport freight as an alternative to highways and railroads held its first meeting Oct. 15.
The Short Sea Shipping Cooperative Program is being led by the Maritime Administration and its administrator, William Schubert, who has advocated more use of short-sea shipping lanes.
Program partners include vessel owners and operators, shippers, trucking and railroad companies, environmental and health interest groups and labor organizations.
The Maritime Administration is sponsoring a conference on Short Sea Shipping in Sarasota, Fla., Nov. 4-6. For more information contact Susan Clark at (202) 366-5807.
