DP World submits terminal proposal for Cochin port
Dubai-based terminal operator Dubai Ports World last week submitted plans for a $200 million terminal in the Port of Cochin, India, a facility that could handle 1 million TEUs at buildout of its first phase.
DP World already operates the existing container terminal for the Cochin Port Trust. The new terminal, the Vallarpadam Internation Transshipment Terminal, is scheduled to come online in 2009.
It is designed to alleviate congestion in the growing south Indian port, as well as to offer regional transshipment alternatives to ports in Singapore and Sri Lanka.
