FDA launches online registration for food processing facilities
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has started its online Web site for food processors to register their operations with the agency.
Domestic and international food processors that do business in the United States must register with the FDA by Dec. 12 to comply with the 2002 Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act. Congress passed the legislation as a way to increase security in the country’s food supply.
Food processors may register with the FDA free of charge at http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~furls/ovffreg.html. FDA Commissioner Mark McLellan, said the registration process is “fast and simple.”
Another rule to take effect Dec. 12 is the FDA’s requirement for prior notice of all imported foods before they enter U.S. ports.
