FDA offers small firms food import, facility registration guides

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has developed guides to help small companies comply with the agency’s new food facility registration and prior notice process for food imports.

FDA published its final interim rules Oct. 10. Congress mandated that FDA develop and implement these rules under the 2002 Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act.

The FDA said it had determined that the rules would have a “significant economic impact” on small food facilities and importers.

The guides are available online at http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/guidance.html.
