FDA readies shippers for new food safety import rules

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will hold a public meeting Oct. 28 to prepare shippers for new import regulations required for implementation by the 2002 Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act.

The two areas of focus for the meeting, which will be available for viewing at FDA facilities nationwide via satellite downlinks, are the registration of food facilities and the prior notice procedure for imported food shipments.

The FDA will publish its final rules in the Federal Register soon. “The purpose of the satellite downlink public meeting is to provide information on the rules to the public and to provide the public an opportunity to ask questions of clarification,” the agency said.
