Final phase of hazmat driver checks implemented

The Transportation Security Administration on May 31 began requiring commercial truck driver who haul hazardous materials to undergo a fingerprint background check in order to renew or transfer their driver license.

Workers seeking a new commercial drivers license with a hazmat endorsement have had to undergo criminal history background checks since January as part of a federal security plan to reduce the threat of potential terrorists using truck transport with dangerous loads in an attack. The data is run through FBI databases to check for potential terrorist connections or certain disqualifying criminal behavior.
