Fire put out on MOL ship
A fire in the engine room of the containership “MOL Initiative” was completely extinguished Sunday afternoon, nearly a week after it was first discovered.
The fire started early morning April 3 with the ship about 45 kilometers south of Nemuro, Hokkaido. The vessel, deployed on the New World Alliance’s weekly Asia/U.S. East Coast/U.S. West Coast APX service, was on voyage from Oakland to Tokyo.
All 26 crewmembers were evacuated from the ship by helicopter without injury. MOL said the incident didn’t cause any oil leakage.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
