First U.S. beef exports to Taiwan to arrive next week

Following the recent end of the ban on U.S. beef exports to Taiwan, the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) said Saturday it expects the first orders of U.S. beef to begin arriving in Taiwan by air next week.

Taiwan has reopened its market to imports of boneless U.S. beef from animals under 30 months of age harvested after April 16. It is the first major Asian market to lift the ban following the discovery of a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or “mad cow” disease, in a cow imported from Canada in December 2003.

The United States exported $76.3 million worth of beef and beef variety meat to Taiwan in 2003, said USMEF.
