Five panamax ships consecutively transit Panama CanalÆs Gatun Locks
The Panama Canal Authority said five 'extreme-sized' panamax ships, each more than 900 feet long, consecutively transited the canal's southbound Gatun Locks Aug. 26. The transit time was five hours for all five vessels.
Normally, six locomotives and 12 wires are used to accommodate regular panamax vessels. The five that transited consecutively required eight locomotives and 16 wires, the authority said in a statement.
