Fletcher takes command of SDDC
Brig. Gen. Charles Fletcher Jr. has taken command of the U.S. military’s surface transportation logistics unit, effective Tuesday.
Fletcher replaces Maj. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody, commander of the Surface Deployment Distribution Command (formerly the Military Traffic Management Command) since October 2002.
Prior to taking command of SDDC, Fletcher served as assistant deputy chief of staff, G-4 (Logistics), at the Pentagon.
Fletcher joins the SDDC at a critical time. In the past two years, the command has distributed the most Defense Department cargoes in a half century to support military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
During Operation Iraqi Freedom II, conducted in a seven-month period ending this month, SDDC was responsible for 330 vessel operations. The moves involved equipment of eight of the Army’s 10 divisions, several National Guard brigades and the Marines. Operation Iraqi Freedom III, which is expected to start in September, will involve a similar volume of cargo, SDDC said.
