Florida FTAA names new president

Florida FTAA, an organization devoted to bringing the Free Trade Area of the Americas headquarters to Miami, has named Brian Dean as its new president.

Dean, a Latin American specialist from the Republican International Institute in Washington, D.C. replaces Jorge Arrizurieta, the group’s original president.

Arrizurieta accepted a position as a consultant with the Miami law firm Akerman Senterfitt. He left after trade talks became stymied over the last two years. FTAA negotiators have not met since 2004 and missed their January 2005 deadline to complete negotiations.

The Bush administration has shifted its focus to making trade agreements with individual countries.
