Gap to close distribution center
Clothing retailer Gap Inc. plans to close its Edgewood, Md., distribution center this summer and transfer the work to facilities in New York and Tennessee, according to the Associated Press.
Gap, which owns Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic brands, said the plant was closed to increase efficiency. Layoffs for the 170 workers there could start in April.
Earlier this month, Gap reported a 5 percent decrease in net sales for the month of January and comparable store sales decreased 7 percent compared with a 3 percent increase in January 2004.
