Georgia ports break cargo tonnage record
The Georgia Ports Authority, which operates the deepwater ports in Savannah and Brunswick, along with inland barge operations in Bainbridge and Columbus, said Monday that a record 18.3 million tons of cargo was shipped through its owned and operated terminals in the fiscal year ended June 30.
The port of Savannah, the United States’ fifth-largest container port, handled 1.76 million TEUs in the fiscal year 2005, a 12 percent increase over the previous fiscal year.
The port of Brunswick handled a record 326,051 auto and machinery units between July, 2004 and June 2005. Breakbulk tonnage for all terminals increased 24.4 percent, or 564,299 tons, to 2.87 million tons.
Also on Monday, the port authority named Sen. Mack Mattingly as its chairman.
