GEORGIA PORTS START FISCAL YEAR WITH DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH

   The Georgia Ports Authority's terminals in Savannah and Brunswick saw a 17-percent increase in tonnage to 2.49 million tons through the first two months of fiscal year 2003, which started July 1.

   Savannah's tonnage increased 16.7 percent. The port's container tonnage rose 25.3 percent to 1.6 million tons, while container throughput increased 20.2 percent to 225,965 TEUs in July and August.

   Brunswick's tonnage rose 19.0 percent for the July-August period.

   Automobile and machinery units handled by the two ports increased 47.5 percent to 46,743. Savannah's units increased 122.5 percent while Brunswick traffic rose 44.5 percent.
