Hanjin entering China/East Med trade with alliance partners

Hanjin Shipping will enter the China/East Mediterranean trade in mid-May by joining the recently started weekly East Med Express (EMX) of its CKYH Alliance partners, COSCO Container Lines, “K” Line and Yang Ming.

Seoul, Korea-based Hanjin will swap space on the service with Taiwan’s Yang Ming from May 17. Hanjin will market the service as the Greece and Israel Express (GIX).

The service uses seven vessels of about 3,000 TEUs on a port rotation of Shanghai, Ningbo, Hong Kong, Shekou, Singapore, Ashdod, Piraeus, Thessaloniki, Singapore, Hong Kong and back to Shanghai.

“The new direct link between China and East Mediterranean will stabilize the company’s sales outpost in Israel and Greece region, where transport volumes are rapidly increasing and help strengthen the company’s strategy for niche market,” Hanjin said in a statement. “In addition, GIX service is expected to diversify both the previous Mediterranean services and Asia/Mediterranean services and improve competitive strength in these services.”
