HIGHER CONTAINER TRAFFIC IN 2002 AT ROTTERDAM

   The port of Rotterdam estimates that it handled its highest ever volumes of containers and oil products in 2002.

   According to the port’s provisional figures, container traffic increased by 7 percent in 2002, to 6.5 million TEUs, from 6.1 million in 2001.

   Oil product traffic was up 27 percent on the previous year. Roll-on/roll-off volume was up 8 percent.

   By contrast, the Dutch port saw traffic levels fall by 2 percent for crude oil, 3 percent for other liquid bulk goods, 19 percent for agricultural bulk goods, 9 percent for other dry bulk goods, and 11 percent for other general cargo.
