HOEMANN NAMED TOP U.S. COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SAFETY ATTORNEY

Trucking industry veteran Warren Hoemann has been appointed chief counsel of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration by U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta.

Hoemann, who assumes his duties March 17, was vice president of the California Trucking Association. He will also serve as chief deputy to acting administrator Annette Sandberg, who has been nominated by President Bush to become the safety agency's administrator.

The California Trucking Association represents 2,500 trucking companies and affiliated suppliers before the California legislature and state agencies.

CTA opposed the DOT's efforts to open the southern border to Mexican trucking companies as part of the North American Free Trade Agreement. CTA joined several organizations that successfully filed suit to stop entry of long-haul Mexican trucks on the grounds that Mexican vehicles do not comply with U.S. clean air provisions.

Hoemann spent 28 years in the trucking industry, including 11 years at Yellow Corp., the holding company for giant less-than-truckload carrier Yellow Transportation. He served as vice president for government relations at Yellow.
