Honduras gets radiation detector from U.S.

The U.S. Department of Energy has loaned large-scale radiation detection machines to Honduras to passively scan containers for smuggled radioactive or nuclear material that could be used by terrorists to attack global shipping or U.S. interests.

The technical assistance is being provided by the National Nuclear Security Administration as part of its Megaports Initiative, which is designed to bolster Customs and Border Protection’s Container Security Initiative by giving foreign governments the means to inspect shipments headed to the United States.

The NNSA, which will also train Honduran authorities to use the equipment, did not say how many radiation portal monitors Honduras would receive.
