Hutchison to develop Barcelona container terminal
The Barcelona Port Authority has awarded a concession to the Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) majority owned Terminal Catalunya S.A. (TERCAT), to build and operate a new container terminal, Prat Pier Container Terminal, at the Spanish port.
The Hong Kong-based port operator December signed a conditional agreement with Spanish stevedore Grupo Mestre to acquire a majority stake in TERCAT.
“We are delighted to learn about the decision, and we welcome the port of Barcelona as our key port in southern Europe. We look forward to developing the port together with our partner Grupo Mestre and the Port Authority,” said John Meredith, group managing director of HPH.
HPH is the world’s largest port operator, handling 51.8 million TEUs in 2005.
